Drumheller is a small city in the Canadian province of Alberta, located about 25 km (16 mi) east of Calgary. It was named after the nearby drumheller creek and has a population of 11,412 as of 2016. Visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum
The Royal Tyrrell Museum is located in Drumheller, Alberta. It is a fascinating place to visit and you will learn about the history of dinosaurs and other animals that lived on earth millions of years ago.
The museum has more than 30 exhibits that show how paleontologists study fossils, including casts made from actual bones found by scientists in Alberta’s badlands region. You can also see displays about dinosaur fossils found across Canada and even around the world!

Drive Along Hoodoo Trail
The Hoodoo Trail is a scenic drive that runs through the Badlands, and it’s fun for tourists and locals alike. To get started, follow Highway 12 south from Drumheller for about an hour until you reach Pincher Creek. Then, continue on Highway 3 and turn left onto Highway 62 until you reach the town of Canyonlands National Park.
The trail itself is about 40km long (24 miles), with several points of interest along the way:
Drumheller Canyon Lodge – This lodge was built by John Cuthbert in 1904 as a basecamp for hunting expeditions into Canada’s Mackenzie River Delta. Today it remains one of Alberta’s most popular destinations thanks to its proximity to wildlifeparking opportunities or simply just relaxing at one of its many restaurants! Explore the Badlands
The Badlands are a unique geological feature that can be found in the Northwest Territories. They’re made up of ancient rock formations, which were formed millions of years ago and are now covered in grasses and shrubs.
The badlands are also home to some great hiking trails, including the Chief Mountain Trail (which is actually longer than it looks), as well as other trails that lead you through spruce forests or up into high plateaus with 360-degree views across a landscape of shifting sandstone columns.
If you’re looking for camping opportunities while visiting Drumheller then there’s no better place than these windswept hillsides where nature has created its own ecosystem! You’ll be able to relax under clear skies gazing at bright stars while listening to coyotes howl at nightfall; or wake up early before dawn so that you can see their shadows dance across your tent walls as they hunt rabbits below them—it really doesn’t get much better than this!
Discover the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site
If you’re looking to learn about the history of coal mining, this is the place. The Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site was first opened in 1887 and operated until its closure in 1952. It has since been restored as a museum with exhibits dedicated to providing visitors with an understanding of how coal was extracted from here before it became too dangerous for miners.
There are also tours available where you can explore underground tunnels through which many workers passed during their time working at this site (the tours last about 45 minutes). There’s also an Interpretive Center where you can pick up brochures about this important piece of Canadian heritage, as well as take guided or self-guided tours through some of these tunnels yourself! For those who enjoy rock climbing or hiking around town, there’s even an opportunity here for them too!
Go Geocaching
Geocaching is an outdoor activity that involves searching for and finding hidden containers or “caches” using GPS. The object of the game is to locate as many “caches” as possible over a specific amount of time, usually 24–48 hours. Participants are encouraged to record their finds on a special log sheet, which they can then take back home with them (or upload online). - Find an area with easy access to fresh trails and water sources so you can stay hydrated throughout your adventure!
- Be prepared: wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of sunscreen if needed. You could also consider investing in bug spray or repellent if nothing else works well enough yet because insects often appear near cachers’ campsites during warmer months—especially mosquitoes!
Attend a Summer Concert at the Downtown Amphitheatre
The Downtown Amphitheatre is a great place to enjoy live music. It’s located on the banks of Red Deer River and offers a beautiful view of Drumheller as well as downtown Drumheller. Each Friday evening from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, the amphitheatre hosts free concerts for all ages. These events are family-friendly and open to the public, so you can bring your friends or family members along with you!

Learn to Fly Fish at Dinosaur Fly Fishing
If you’re looking to learn how to fly fish, Dinosaur Fly Fishing is a great place to do it. They offer lessons and guided tours year round, so whether you want to take your kids or just enjoy the outdoors with friends, this is the place for you.
Dinosaur Fly Fishing offers everything from group lessons (which cost about $50 per person) all the way up through private instruction at their facility in Drumheller. Their gift shop has a wide variety of items from local artisans and artists, as well as clothing items that can be purchased while on tour with them or purchased after returning home with souvenirs such as bows made out of recycled materials such as old fishing rods!
If there is one thing I would recommend doing while in Drumheller—whether staying overnight or not—it would be visiting Dinosaur Fly Fishing!
Go Horseback Riding with Outback Trail Rides
If you’re in Drumheller, it’s worth a visit to Outback Trail Rides. The iconic badlands landscape is a perfect backdrop for riding horses and learning about the history of this part of Alberta. The owners have been running this business since 1994 and offer horseback riding lessons as well as trail rides around their property.
Outback Trail Rides is located at 7081 Highway 2A, just outside Drumheller on Highway 2A (also known as “the Trans Canada”). They have three different types of horseback rides available: 1 hour beginner lesson; 1 hour intermediate lesson; or full day guided tour ($240 per person).
Play a Round of Golf at the Dinosaur Valley Mini-Golf Course
Mini golf is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, relax and have fun with friends. It’s also a good way to get out of the house! The Dinosaur Valley Mini-Golf Course is located about 15 minutes from Drumheller and offers 18 holes of miniature golf for you to play. You can choose between three different courses: Dinosaur Valley, which has dinosaurs in its theme; Biosphere 2, where you can see how humans lived on another planet; or Canadian Rockies National Park where they have geysers and caves as part of their design scheme.
The course was built by an Ottawa couple who had been wanting a place where they could take their children but hadn’t found one yet that met all their needs so they decided on creating something uniquely theirs; thus it became known as “the mini-golf course”.
Explore Lions Park and Campground
Lions Park and Campground is a great place to take the kids, dog and picnic. The park has easy access and plenty of parking. The campground has a nice view of the river valley and can be used for camping or picnics in good weather conditions (it’s closed when it rains).
The park also hosts an annual festival every August called “Lions Festival” where you can see live entertainment from local musicians or watch kids’ activities like BMX racing at night!
